Party at the Polls

The power of canvassing & pole standing

TOLEDO - We are only days away from the Nov. 4 election, so, to turn a civic duty into a celebration, Toledo Persists and the Lucas County Democrats teamed up to inform voters about our local democratic ticket.

Signs, signs … everywhere a sign. (Photos/Lori King)

Party at the Polls, held Nov. 1, included canvassing, pole standing and phone banking, as well as sign waving outside of the Lucas County Board of Elections, where citizens were early voting. Early voting ends today, Nov. 2, at 4 p.m. There is no early voting on Monday.

‘And I’m out here today because I want to thank people for showing up to vote. Local elections are so important. They impact our daily lives in so many ways. And this is really where we have so much power. So, I think everybody should come vote and don’t give away your power.’ > Heather Nye | Toledo Persists

For this episode, I was there to cover all the action! I interviewed two sign holders, Heather Nye and Sarah Cullum, who were standing on the corner of Harvest Lane and Sylvania Ave. waving signs and blowing bubbles; then I followed Erin Kramer around a nearby neighborhood as she knocked on doors; and finally I spoke with two pole standers, Heather Spies and Derek Wilmott, who were having fun during their very first time handing out the democratic slate to voters who wanted one.

Erin Kramer canvasses door to door.

In full discloser, I take a dem slate every time I vote. However, the slate supports Toledo candidates, and I’m from Monclova. So, for those of you who live outside of the city, click HERE to view a sample ballot for your town. It looks like this:

Vote for democrat Jared J. Lefevre.

According to the League of Women Voters of Ohio FAQ, this is considered a municipal election year, meaning you’ll be voting on candidates seeking office for:

  • Mayor, or city manager for those in townships or who use the council manager system

  • City council members

  • Trustees

  • School board members

  • Municipal judges

  • Local treasurers and auditors

  • Some voters will also be choosing members of their Educational Service Center

As always, thank you for supporting the Definitely … a King podcast! I appreciate it!
